This is my own, but I did get quite a number of pleased Doomers chiming in with the comments! As far as I know, no wad was "designed directly for the Unity port" before this one was.įirst thing I want to mention is that this wad has several playthroughs on YT: (I know splitscreen DM is possible on the iwads, but those sadly contain a whopping 0 passable DM arenas, let alone actually fun ones.)Īs a little prelude to this "resume", I do want to mention that the wad was built from the ground-up with the Unity port specifically in mind, I believe making it the absolute first of its kind. I was pleasantly surprised to see the thing that was almost entirely responsible for Doom64's lame sales figures back in 1997 - a lack of local splitscreen multiplayer - is still definitely in demand! Even in the Covid era, which hopefully is a temporary thing anyway. There's been a lot of positive feedback, and there's quite a number of people who really do want local deathmatch. Hey peoples, normally I wouldn't do this sort of thing for fear of it being "self-fart-sniffy", but I wanted to go ahead and make up a case for Bourgeois to be included as an official add-on. Maybe the plot is more similar to Doom 2, than I assume right now.) (Of course, I haven't reached the ending of KDiKDiZD. Instead, the plot is focused purely on overcoming seemingly impossible odds, while maybe also gathering small crumpets of background lore. There is no strong focus on "what the hell happened", and no new big catastrophe happening right around you. Plot of Doom 2 is more similar to Shores of Hell or, say, Struggle in its narative. Compare Doom1 E1 and Doom 2016 on one hand to Doom 2 on the other hand. That's why I was talking about Doom 2016 up to Argent Tower, but not further.)Įh, not exactly. (In doom 2016, this stops happenning in the second half of the campaign, because the game greatly reduces amount of exploration and almost completely focuses of pure arena fights. Moreover, you do not know, if a particular area is just a cool backdrop for exploration, or a proper arena for some deadly fight. But nobody in their right mind would use the world "similar" to compare those two maps.Īnd when it comes to comparing Doom 2016 with KDiKDiZD, both campaigns have very blurry borders betweenĪ) Blurry borders between incidental combat and smaller setpieces (one pair of encounter types)ī) Blurry borders between smaller setpieces and larger setpieces (different pair of encounter types)Ĭ) Complex layout, which naturally incorporates lots of incidental comabt and small arena-like combat. Both John Romero's E1m3 Toxin Refinery from Doom 1 and, say, Ribbiks' Map 03 The Horror from Wormwood ]l[ can be described by this sentence. But there are different mixes and different details in different WADs.
