It’s not insanity, however, to keep listening to Professor Buzzkill. When someone told him Einstein didnt actually say that, he said, In the words of Gandhi, My bad. It was a sort of guide book for addicts who trying to overcome their disease, and it warned its readers that, “insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results.” Narcotics Anonymous was trying to convince its members that continuing to use narcotic drugs and expecting to be able to stop on their own was folly. Senator Rand Paul reflected on Mitt Romneys potential 2016 campaign and said, Its sort of what Einstein said, that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. The “definition of insanity” quote first appeared in 1981, in a document published by Narcotics Anonymous. (By the way, two other brainiacs and quote attractors, Ben Franklin and Mark Twain, are also credited with coining this idea.) Is it any wonder, therefore, that the quote, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” is attributed to him? Alas, Buzzkillers, quotes like this seem to attach themselves to Einstein at the speed of light, and there’s no evidence he ever said it. He also contributed greatly to the philosophy of science. His theories helped scientists break through some of the barriers to our understanding the physical world and the universe. And here’s some more evidence that the quote was published even earlier, in a Hazelden Foundation pamphlet from 1980.Īt any rate, it doesn’t look like Einstein came up with the gem, but as one of the sites I found on this wild goose chase put it: It’s not surprising that it has been attributed to Einstein, since everything but the Book of Genesis has been attributed to him at some point.Albert Einstein was one of the most significant scientific geniuses of the 20th century. However, the Wikiquote page for Rita Mae Brown has this interesting tidbit: An even earlier version of the quote can be found in the Narcotics Anonymous “Basic Text,” released in November 1981 ( PDF). “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” Unfortunately, Susan didn’t remember what Jane Fulton once said. Online, sources commonly attribute the quote to Einstein in his *Letters to Solovine: 1906-1955,* although no one seems to be able to produce a page from that volume that holds the quote ( and Google books searches have also come up empty).Īn earlier version of the quote came from author Rita Mae Brown’s novel *Sudden Death,* published by Bantam in 1983. A good summary of the various places the quote has been used can be found here.įranklin and Twain are almost certainly not the sources of the quote, witty as those fellows were. I began looking into the quote to find out what Einstein actually said only to find that, in all likelihood, *he never actually said or wrote the witticism about insanity.*Īccording to Ryan Howes, writing in Psychology Today, the quote has been attributed to Einstein, Ben Franklin and Mark Twain. ![]()
